Mexican

The wife and I were in the mood for some Tex-Mex and we read some decent reviews for this place.

    Dos Equis at El Tio
  • Dos Equis – Straight forward, nice decent size and a reasonable price for a draft beer. There is something to be said for Dos Equis and Mexican food.
  • Chips and Salsa at El Tio
  • Chips and Salsa – Nice thin and hot chips. Some of the chips were stuck together. The salsa is very chunky and has a nice blend of herbs to it. Not hot though which was fine by the wife’s standards.
  • Chicken Fajita 1 at El Tio
Chicken Fajita 2 at El Tio
  • Chicken Fajita – One thing I could appreciate about the fajita’s were that the chicken was marinated. Very well. It wasn’t some bland chicken that was lightly grilled. Also loved the assortment of vegetables though I could have done without the extra grease. Be sure to ask for the green chili sauce if you’re looking for a spicy kick, authentic stuff. The tortillas were warm and fluffy, which is a plus in my book. The beans and rice were a bit weak.
  • Enchilada at El Tio at El Tio
  • Chicken and Spinach & Cheese Enchilada -Wife got some combo of enchiladas. The spinach one was a disappointment. The enchilada was too watery and very bland. The chicken on the other hand had a nice assortment of flavors and hit the spot for her.

Decor: When we came, there was a party in the back with a full Mariachi band, everyone seemed to be having a good time. We were seated near the front where the bar was. Earthy clay colors for the color scheme, the tables were solid wood and chairs comfortable. The service was fantastic. Service was quick and the servers were always friendly when one asked for things.

Overall Assessment: ($$, 7/10) – The service was top notch, there was an assortment of hits and misses for the dishes. Probably more hits than misses. Prices are very reasonable for a Tex Mex. The flavoring of the dishes were usually ok.

Was in the mood for some Mexican last night

    Margaritas at Guajillo Grill
  • Margaritas Regular – The Margaritas were some of the best that we had. A very crisp and distinct lime flavor with a smooth tequila finish.
  • Nick No-jito at Guajillo Grill
  • Nick No-jito – The virgin mojito. Nice basil taste, but the soda water was too strong and really dominated the taste a little too much.
  • Chips and Salsa at Guajillo Grill
  • Chips and Salsa – The salsa is a bit on the spicier side. Both come out warm, which is wonderful. The salsa has a bit of a chorizo flavor. Very nice how they incorporated the chilies into the dish.
  • Shrimp Ceviche at Guajillo Grill
  • Shrimp Ceviche – The flavoring was done well again. The shrimp though was a bit tight, it tasted a bit overcooked. The red onions were mild and blended in nicely with the lime juice and the sweet tomatoes with a pinch of hot spice.
  • Madurlos at Guajillo Grill
  • Madurlos (Sweet fried plantains served with sour cream) – The plantains were hot, and the sweetness went really well with the sour cream sauce. I hate sour cream but was able to appreciate the flavor combination.
  • Chicken Enchilada at Guajillo Grill
  • Chicken Enchilada – The chicken enchilada was good yet nothing that was extraordinary. We loved the white oaxaca cheese on top. The rice and beans were amazing. The refried beans had a hearty flavor without a heavy feel. The rice had an assortment of veggies that blended well together.
  • Mole Poblano 1 at Guajillo Grill
Mole Poblano 2 at Guajillo Grill
Mole Poblano 3 at Guajillo Grill
  • Mole Poblano (Chicken breast served in a rich chocolate mole sauce) – The chicken came with some corn tortillas that had that grainy maize feel. That went really well with the mole sauce. The sauce had the sweet salty balance that I liked with a chocolate undertone with just a hint of chili peppers. The chicken was cooked to a good degree without it being over cook and dry.

Decor: Waiters were friendly and the service was reasonable. The walls are decorated with an orange red color with Mexican paintings posted on the wall. Chairs were sort of a tiki basket mesh. Not exactly the most comfortable but serviceable.

Overall Assessment: ($$, 7/10) – The Margaritas are great and the chips and salsa are also some of the best we’ve had. The portions are very generous here so that offsets some of the higher than average prices of Mexican food. We watched some burritos pass us by and we laughed the the enormity of them. Of course more booze will help to quickly rack up that bill. Service was not bad as well. The food is a little hit or miss. Inconsistency lowers the rankings a bit.

Ok this was our main resort. Instead of posting one for every day, we are doing a mega post about the place on our last day here. I wasn’t able to mark down everything so a lot of this is memory from a photo but there is enough here to get the picture.

    Fruit Cocktail
  • Fruit Cocktail – They great you with this fruit cocktail when you get there. A combination of pineapple, and passion fruit and some other citrus drinks. Very nice especially after the flight and ride over.
  • Mimosa
  • Mimosa – This was part of the Sunday brunch. Nice fresh orange juice washed down with so so champagne, but it still was not too bad.
  • Cappuccino
  • Cappuccino – Nice frothiness, better than the single cup Krup dispensers. However it was lacking a bit on the bitterness of the coffee.,
  • Coffee
  • Coffee – Makes me wonder about the piss that passes for coffee here in the states. Very nice and mild yet aromatic. Great start to the morning.
  • Drinks 1
  • Pina Colada – We had so many of these things. Very inconsistent on the mix. The first one I had was loaded with booze. However some were watered down, some were too sweet. Nevertheless nothing beats sucking down this tropical drink while relaxing in the sun.
  • Strawberry Banana Daiquiri – The strawberry and banana were mixed pretty well. Perfect consistency and mix.
  • Drinks 2
  • Banana Mama – We got hooked on these bad boys while we were down there. Basically Pina Colada with Banana mixed in.
  • Copacabana – The wife states these taste like spiked Sunny D’s. I would have to agree with her on that assessment.
  • Drinks 3
  • Banana Mama – We got hooked on these bad boys while we were down there. Basically Pina Colada with Banana mixed in.
  • Margarita – So so. Not enough lime taste.
  • Melon Martini
  • Melon Martini – A hint of melon in sour six. Only so so.
  • Mint Martini
  • Mint Martini – This was really disgusting. It felt like I was drinking Mouthwash. Strong alcohol taste with a mint taste.
  • Rose Wine
  • Rose Wine – Nothing really great. Not that sweet.
  • Soup
  • Tomato Soup – Not very creamy, more of a water base.
  • Garlic Soup – Wife liked the mild garlic taste.
  • Chips and Guacamole
  • Chips and Guacamole – The chips are thicker, more like a baked tortilla, Unfortunately it makes it a bit hard as well. The guacamole and salsa were fresh and made for a great mix.
  • Mussels
  • Mussels – The mussels were overcooked and very stringy. Also a high seafood aftertaste.
  • Salad
  • Salad – The lettuce was usually pretty fresh. Not a lot of variety for salad dressings. We think we only saw ranch, Italian, French and Blue Cheese. I usually went with some beet, ham and corn to add some natural sweetness and saltiness to the salad.
  • Mushroom Salad – Assortment of mushrooms and peppers drizzled in a light olive oil sauce.
  • Plate 01
  • Clockwise from 12 o’clock moving inward
  • Grilled Sirloin – The slice of beef was grilled fairly nicely. Marinated pretty well.
  • Rice and Beans The rice and beans were a bit dry but still not too bad.
  • Plantain – The plantain was really dried out. Not a lot of sweetness to it.
  • Carbonara Pasta – The first day it was good, the second not so much. The sauce was light and the ham blended nicely with the rich creamy sauce.
  • Plate 02
  • Clockwise from 12 o’clock moving inward
  • Hot Dog and Onions – The hotdogs taste more salty and a bit more artificial than the Us, the onions were grilled nicely.
  • Guacamole – See above
  • Bread – The breads here weren’t that great but they weren’t awful either.
  • Pasta Bolognese – The pasta was a bit overcooked and the Bolognese sauce was a bit flavorless.
  • Grilled Chicken – The chicken was dry and not very tasty either
  • Grilled Pork Chop – I thought it was interesting how the pork chop tasted more like grilled ham.
  • Tacos
  • Clockwise from 12 o’clock moving inward
  • Grilled Pork – The pork was very tender but due to it being seated in the buffet, some parts had dried out.
  • Potato and Shrimp Salad – The shrimp was very tight. However the potato was cooked well, and the combination of some mild fruits and the very light mayo made for a very good cool salad.
  • Shrimp Taco – The shrimps were tiny and a bit over cooked. The onion and peppers were very well marinated. The tortillas were a little cold.
  • Guacamole – See above review
  • Red Chile Sauce – A bit of a picante taste to it.
  • Chorizo Taco – The amount of redness in the sausage is a bit of a concern but the chorizo itself was a little dry as well.
  • Plate 03
  • Clockwise from 12 o’clock moving inward
  • Taquitos- The shells were a little hard. The filling was only so so.
  • Beans and Rice – Nothing extraordinary. Very flavorful. They also added some bananas in here I think.,
  • Chicken in Mole Sauce – Chicken was a little too overdone. The mole sauce was not as good as the one in Xel-Ha
  • Cream Spinach – The wife liked it because it was a welcome veggie dish. It was very creamy and the spinach was a little too wet.
  • Shrimp Tacos – See the review above for the tacos. AS you can see, the wife thought the green chill sauce was guacamole. Someone was in a bit of a rude awakening.
  • Plate 04
  • Clockwise from 12 o’clock moving inward
  • Assorted taco mess – See above
  • Lasagna – Not really great lasagna, the ground beef filling was so so and the lack of cheese was a bit of a disappointment.
  • Beef Chalupa – Very crunchy exterior. The filling itself though was a real disappointment. The beef was gristly and lots of lettuce and cheese.
  • Plate 05
  • Clockwise from 12 o’clock moving inward
  • Omelet – The omelet chef here was great. She cooked the ingredients before hand on the side, then scooped the stuff into the egg wrap. Constructed well without any thing falling.
  • Fried Egg – Not much to report here. Pretty standard
  • Chroizo – I’m not a fan of the chorizo here. Just too hard. I was trying to recreate a has brown mix with the egg and it really didn’t work out.
  • Sausage – Nice sausages, Full of flavor, a bit on the oily side but that’s what makes it taste good.
  • Chicken with Mustard – Interesting that they had this lightly breaded chicken with mustard as a breakfast item. The chicken was cooked a bit too dry, though the mustard had some bite to it.
  • Hash Browns – These were awesome. Fried until perfectly crisp and crunchy. The center was cooked well and the flavoring was perfect. Light on the grease and oil as well. I could just eat these for breakfast.
  • Sausage – Glorified hot dogs in tomato sauce.
  • Plate 06
  • Clockwise from 12 o’clock moving inward
  • Croissant – A bit hard, and not layer or crispness to it.
  • Macaroni Salad – Awesome salad. Macaroni with ham, pineapple, and cheese in a bit of a mao dressing. Teh cheese gives the dish flavoring but not too overpowering.
  • Chicken with Mustard – See above.
  • Beef Fajita meat – The beef was a little too chewy The onions were overcooked.
  • Rice – Standard fare for the rice. They really do rice nicely here.
  • Carbonara Pasta – See above
  • Plate 07
  • Clockwise from 12 o’clock moving inward
  • Assorted Sushi – It wasn’t as bad as the ones from Bamboo but it was pretty close.
  • Macaroni Salad – See above.
  • Salad – See above.
  • Guacamole and Salsa – See above.
  • Plate 08
  • Clockwise from 12 o’clock moving inward
  • Chicken Wings – The wings were cooked in this really mild tomato sauce. The chicken was overcooked and a little on the chewy side
  • Grilled Fish – We can’t get over how they make the fish on a buffet table still taste good. Lightly marinated in butter and not cooked over the top.
  • Grilled Vegetables – The veggies varied from being cooked perfectly to being overcooked. The flavoring was pretty unimaginative.
  • Rice – See above.
  • Plate 09
  • Clockwise from 12 o’clock moving inward
  • Pineapple Salad – The pineapple was sweet and the mayo was mild.
  • Coleslaw – Not too sour nor not flavorful, the cabbage was a bit undercooked
  • Pasta Salad – The pasta salad was heavy on the dressing. olives and black beans with a sort of pesto sauce. /li>
  • Onion Ring – As you can see this thing was enormously large
  • Cream Spinach – See above
  • Grilled Pork – This time the pork tasted like a pork tenderloin though a bit on the chewy side. Mild seasoning.
  • Deviled Egg – Wife loved the caviar topping. I though overall the egg was so so as the egg filling was a bit too mustardy and a bit too dry for my taste.
  • Plate 10
  • Seafood Pasta Dish – Sadly the best part of the dish was the noodles. I actually got this batch fresh, they had just finish cooking it so I assumed that it would be better due to that. all of the seafood was overcooked. The lobster was rubbery and tough. The shrimp were like mush. The squid was like pieces of rubber. Interestingly enough the pasta was a bit hard. How they manage to do that?
  • Plate 11
  • Clockwise from 12 o’clock moving inward
  • Grilled Fish – The exterior was a bit on the crispier side than the other grilled fish but it was good still. The exterior crispiness gave it a more char taste which I preferred.
  • Shrimp Tacos – See above.
  • Mushrooms in Cream Sauce – The mushrooms were cooked very well int he sauce. The sauce was sweet and creamy.
  • Corn in Tomato. The sweetness of the corn matched well with the semi raw tomato.
  • Rice – See above.
  • Plate 12
  • Clockwise from 12 o’clock moving inward
  • Beef Stew – The beef was really hard. The stew itself had a bit of wine to it but nothing really special.
  • Turkey – Nice and dry and not a lot of flavor to it.
  • Flauta – It doesn’t look like a flauta but that was what was written next to them. The tortilla was very greasy and the toppings were a bit on the bland side.
  • Fried Fish – Nice crunchy exterior. Though the Fish we had at Xaybe was better.
  • Potatoes – Cooked throughout though very very bland.
  • Rice – See above.
  • Plate 13
  • Clockwise from 12 o’clock moving inward
  • Salad.
  • Rice.
  • Spinach – See above.
  • Crepe
  • Crepe – The crepe was very light and fluffy and you basically got to pour your own sauce over it. There were things like honey, chocolate, strawberry, maple, etc.
  • Assorted Fruit – The fruits were usually pretty fresh and tasted sweet and juicy.
  • Dessert 1
  • Chocolate Creme Cake- Very light and airy mousse. Mild bitter chocolate taste.
  • Assorted Fruit – See above.
  • Dessert 2
  • Chocolate cake – The chocolate icing was pretty heavy and the cake was a bit dried out.
  • Jello – Lime mixed with a chocolate mousse. Not that great.
  • Assorted Fruit – See above.
  • Dessert 3
  • Tiramisu- Very light coffee taste
  • Fruit Tart – The shells were too hard. Wished their was more custard to accompany the fruit.
  • Custard Cake – The custard was very light, the cake was soft and made for a decent mixture.
  • Dessert 4
  • Flambeed Fruit – Not a fan as the fruit was just too syrupy and heavy. I just prefer the natural sweet taste.
  • Butter Pecan Ice Cream – I liked the mild maple taste and the crunchy nuts. The ice cream itself though could have just a bit more velvety texture.
  • Strawberry Ice Cream – I can’t put my finger on it, but something was a little off with the strawberry ice cream. It didn’t have that fresh strawberry taste, a bit more on the artificial taste.
  • Dessert 5
  • Chocolate Creme Cake- See above.
  • Kiwi Tart – Tart shell was more of a waffle. The fruit glaze was so so here as well.
  • Assorted Fruit – See above. Though we were not fans of the papaya, less sweet and had that heavy musky taste to it.,
  • Dessert 6
  • Assorted Fruit – See above.
  • Macaroni Salad – See above
  • Tiramisu- See above.
  • Dessert 7
  • Creme Cake – Cake was a bit on the dry side, but the layers of creme help to mask that a bit.
  • Deviled Egg – See above.
  • Crepe – See above.
  • Dessert 8
  • Chocolate Cake – Very rich and decadent cake. One of the better ones.
  • Butter Pecan Ice Cream with Sprinkles – See above.
  • Key Lime Pie – Very tart and the pie shell was a bit too soft.

Decor: The lunch place is at Lupita. The main cafeteria is for breakfast and dinner. The staff is usually very nice. They were helpful in directing you to your table at dinner and they were usually pretty quick when it came to clearing your tables, whether it was at a restaurant, at the bar, or in the lounge area. The tables at the main cafeteria is nice. Some of the chairs are a little close especially for two people. The dress code is not as strict as reported. I think it’s a no no for tank tops but I did see people in shorts and T-shirts. The decorative appearance is of a laid back summer house with the dull browns.

Overall Assessment: ($, 5/10) – The food while not the greatest was also not the worse either. I think considering the price of the lodging and food, the price is reasonable for the amount of food. I came in with very very low expectations, and they manage to exceed them. I can honestly say that the food was better than my college cafeteria food. Our recommendations are the fish dishes, the beef dishes and the premade salads. The wife loved the convenience of the food, as when you are on the beach, one doesn’t want to think about how we were getting somewhere and what we would be spending.

The last of the resort restaurants.

    Bread at Lupita
  • Bread – The bread was a little buttery and one of the better breads we’ve had on this trip.
  • Ensalada Cesar at Lupita
  • Ensalada Cesar (Cesar salad) – The dressing was a little saltier than it should. But overall very nice, despite the lazy approach of just lettuce and bread with just the dressing.
  • Plato Combinado de Frituras con Salsa Roquefort Champinones Alitas de Pollo Calabacines y Aros de Cebolla at Lupita
  • Plato Combinado de Frituras con Salsa Roquefort Champinones Alitas de Pollo Calabacines y Aros de Cebolla (Mixed platter of fried food with roquefort sauce (mushrooms, chicken wings courgettes and onion ring) – The fried mushrooms were very similar to the Riu Palace. gooey center, thought the exterior batter was a little thicker. The Chicken wings were wet (which I prefer) and full of flavor. The onion rings were lacking. The blue cheese sauce was mild.
  • Crema Bicolor de Alcahofa y Tomate at Lupita
  • Crema Bicolor de Alcahofa y Tomate (Two colored cream asparagus and tomato) – The soup was a bit on the heavy side. I guess you have to in order for there to be a demarcation between the two soups. Very well presented. Taste wise not so much.
  • Top Sirloin a las Brasas at Lupita
  • Top Sirloin a las Brasas (Charbroiled grilled top sirloin) – Ok this isn’t class A steak, but it was tender and very flavorful and juicy.
  • Brocheta de Mar y Terra at Lupita
  • Brocheta de Mar y Terra (Sea and Land Kebab) – The kebab grills were great. This was by far the best shrimp that we had. Very soft and juicy. The beef medallions were juicy as well though a lit over done. The addition of onions and peppers help to accentuate the flavor.
  • Sauces at Lupita
  • Sauces – There is the green chile sauce which really wasn’t that spicy. There was a very mild horseradish sauce as well. Then their was this very tangy mustard sauce.
  • Bella Alaska at Lupita
  • Bella Alaska – Sort of like ice cream cake. The coolest part is that they do this little presentation that looks like a lava pour. The cake itself was very nice. Really hard to mess up an ice cream cake.

Decor: A bit romantic with the outdoor seating overlooking the pale light poolside. The staff was real nice and super attentive. I think the best service so far of all the restaurants we visited within the resorts. Wicker furniture again.

Overall Assessment: ($, 7/10) – Ok This isn’t the greatest steakhouse I’ve ever been to. But given all the dining choices in the all inclusive resort, this is definitely one of the better ones. The service was really really nice. The atmosphere was done very very well.

We came to Xel Ha for the day and the only place that was open the times we went was the Corona Cafe and not the main lunch area.

    Strawberry Daiquiri at Xel Ha
  • Strawberry Daiquiri – Very very sweet. Not much of a liquor taste here.
  • Pina Colada at Xel Ha
  • Pina Colada – The pineapples were once again done very well here. Very nice mild taste.
  • Shrimp Cocktail at Xel Ha
  • Shrimp Cocktail – Ugh this was a disaster, the shrimp was hard like they had been frozen. The sauce was very watery and light.
  • Plate at Xel Ha
  • Rice – The rice was soft and alright.
  • Fish – The fish was cooked very well. The light oil and lemony sauce matched the fish well. Again very good fish for a buffet style.
  • Potato – The potatoes were cooked pretty thoroughly. Not a lot of taste though. They definitely eased up on the spices.
  • Chicken with Mole – The chicken was very very tender. The black mole sauce was a little salty but had a creamy texture and feel to it.
  • Pork – The pork was a tough and lacking any real flavor.
  • Shrimp – The shrimp was overcooked and was mushy and soft.
  • Desserts at Xel Ha
  • Chocolate Cake – The cake had a bit of a heavy bitter chocolate taste and the cake was a bit dry.
  • Carrot Cake – The carrot cake was too sweet in my opinion. It was nice how they had golden raisins in there.
  • Tiramisu – The tiramisu was a very heavy on the cream. Not to my liking.

Decor: Service was nice. It did take forever and a day though for us to be seated. The furniture was of wicker seats and the tables were encased in glass.

Overall Assessment: ($, 3/10) – The fish and chicken were the highlights Everything else was just mediocre or terrible. The food was fairly cheap considering the price of admission into the water park.
