Cuban

Was down in Richmond for business. We went out to dinner with an old classmate that I hadn’t seen in a long while.

Paella de Fideos at Kuba Kuba
  • Paella de Fideos – The seafood on the dish was very fresh. The clams and mussels were all cooked pretty well. The shrimp was crisp. Wife was really miffed as the entree just seemed like it was boxed penne pasta in broth with veggies and seafood. It didn’t seem like the noodles were really simmered in the sauce. In her own words. ” I can make this at home, what’s so special about it.”
  • Roast Pork Shank at Kuba Kuba
  • Roast Pork Shank – I will be the first to say that the portion was huge. The pork however was a bit on the dry side. The onions that came with it were very tender and sweet. The mashed potatoes were ok. It was disappointing given how good the pork roast I had last time was.

Had to go to Richmond for work. Had lunch with my brother in Richmond.

  • Empanadillas (Spinach & Ricotta, Picadillo) – We had one of each these. They were both good. The spinach and ricotta was a good blend. The picadillo which is Cuban beef hash was really good. Flavorful and moist.
  • Tortilla con Chorizo – A huge omelet. It wasn’t that earth shattering. The omelet was full of potatoes and sausage. It was pretty good though. It came with some corn bread that was good size.
  • Kuban Roast Pork – The waiter told me the lunch portion was huge, which my brother and I were like yeah right. Amazingly it was pretty filling. The pork, the rice, and the black beans was a good mixture. The plantains and grilled Cuban bread were good accompaniments.

Decor: Place felt like a dive. Seat wasn’t all that comfortable. The place has Cupban pictures and artifacts all around. There also is a large mural outside of Castro. Atleast the staff was friendly. The service initially was a crawl though.

Overall Assessment ($$, 7/10): The food is definitely worth it. One thing that was upsetting was they had all these specials that looked pretty good. However it was only available after 5 pm. The food I assume is close to authentic cause I saw a bunch of Cubans eating there.
